Steve Snedden > We traveled to Jerome, AZ in the Summer of 2004 with Deb and Jay.
Steve Snedden > Jerome is in the Mingus Mountains about an hour & a half from Sun City. It was a copper mining town founded in 1876. At it's peak there were 15,000 people living there and the mountains - honey-combed with more than 100 miles of mine shafts - endured constant blasting.
Steve Snedden > After a season of abnormally wet weather, there was a colossal mudslide that swept away hundreds of structures. Today, Jerome has fewer than 500 citizend, but they are a colorful lot!
Steve Snedden > The quaint fraction of Jerome still left, 300 buildings, still hug the mountainside.
Steve Snedden > We enjoy the view from the edge of town.
Steve Snedden > Since the road through town zigzags it's way up the mountain, one can stand on one level and see the street below. Here, in a court below is an outhouse where you can try your luck at pitching coins into the "pot".
Steve Snedden > Shopping seems to be the main attraction!
Steve Snedden > We found a resturant carved into the side of the mountain.
